I use to have the same mouse and I think I might have had the same “problem” with the free scrolling becoming like a normal scrolling wheel, I noticed that this would happen after I would reboot the computer… Anyway I did have a solution for it, when you click the wheel (like center button) it would “engage” the free scrolling… I have no idea if that's a feature allowing 2 types of scroll of a defect but that would always work for me…
